Plot Summary:

The Jinzhou Campaign sees Captain Hao Bao leading his soldiers in a fierce battle on the mountain top. When they emerge victorious, his fiancée Lan Zhen lies dead in a pool of blood, leaving behind their young son Lian Wa Zi. Unable to care for his son during the war, Hao Bao entrusts Lian Wa Zi to a fellow villager. Soon after the liberation of China, Hao Bao receives orders to be relocated to the northernmost part of the country, known as "Beidahuang," where he begins his life as a soldier-farmer, maintaining the military structure and discipline.

Transitioning from holding rifles to wielding hoes proves challenging for the soldiers. These men, accustomed to the battlefield, now yearn for families. Despite the lack of houses or people in the wilderness, they long for women, believing that having women would mean having homes. Some even joke that having a child around, crying and making noise, would be better than nothing, so they urge Hao Bao to bring back Lian Wa Zi. At this time, a clerk named Xiao Shanyao goes to the regiment headquarters to fetch mail and brings back a piece of great news: women will soon arrive in Beidahuang, which greatly excites everyone as they eagerly await the arrival of these young women.

Meanwhile, city girl Shen Xiu learns about the recruitment drive in Beidahuang from newspapers shared among her classmates. She excitedly shares this information with her high school friend Luo Weiwei, who is troubled by her marriage. The recruitment offers her a glimmer of hope, and together, they secretly sign up without informing their families.

Hao Bao is preoccupied with the harsh realities of the reclamation zone. Without proper housing, they cut reeds to build shelters; water shortages are managed sparingly; lacking animals and tools, they use their bare hands and shoulders to work the land. Breaking ground in the barren desert is no easy task. Under Hao Bao's leadership, the vanguard battalion takes its first steps onto the wasteland just as the spring snow has melted.

Due to a lack of understanding of agricultural production laws, conflicts arise between the stubborn Hao Bao and Deputy Battalion Commander Geng Xi Wang. Through various competitions, Hao Bao eventually recognizes his mistakes, humbly apologizes to Geng Xi Wang, and diligently studies agricultural knowledge, achieving breakthroughs in production.

As food and shelter issues are temporarily resolved, marriage becomes a fundamental issue for stabilizing morale. Colonel Qiu Da Li from a certain vanguard regiment in the reclamation area rushes to the headquarters in Jiamusi to report the situation to the general. The organization attaches great importance to this matter and accelerates recruitment efforts in the cities. Despite opposition from their families, Shen Xiu and her cousin Luo Weiwei set foot on the land of Beidahuang. Several soldiers are specially dispatched from the battalion headquarters to ensure the safe journey of these girls northward. Along the way, clerk Xiao Shanyao gives special attention to Shen Xiu. This handsome young man can recite Tang poetry and uses a slingshot to shoot birds, bringing much joy to Shen Xiu. As they travel further north, the desolation becomes more apparent, revealing the harsh reality day by day. The group encounters bandits, but Xiao Shanyao saves Shen Xiu and the other female soldiers with his intelligence and bravery, deepening their relationship.

Upon reaching their destination, Fumian, the battalion organizes a training team. When the soldiers of Longshan’s vanguard battalion hear that the women will be distributed to various companies after training, they all strive to tidy up their dugouts. In Fumian, Hao Bao immediately notices the smart and pretty Shen Xiu, finding her resemblance to his deceased fiancée Lan Zhen, deeply embedding her in his heart.

The female soldiers finally arrive in Beidahuang. The bleakness of the place startles them upon arrival. Hao Bao rudely scolds the girls, frightening Shen Xiu until she spots Xiao Shanyao in the crowd, calming her somewhat. The frightened female soldiers burst into loud cries, shaking the house almost to collapse, leaving the men at a loss, none daring to enter. Exhausted from crying, the female soldiers must face reality, but Hao Bao's rudeness and machismo make Shen Xiu very fearful.

Soon, another group of women from Shandong arrives at Longshan. Shen Xiu and the others go to greet them. Initially, the women refuse to get off the bus, but when presented with green onions and pancakes, they step down one by one. Alone, Shen Xiu learns to operate a tractor, becoming one of the first female tractor drivers in Beidahuang. Many female soldiers have settled down in Beidahuang, having children, while only Hao Bao and Shen Xiu remain unmarried. Then, Xiao Shanyao sacrifices himself saving civilians. Devastated, Shen Xiu falls ill. Hao Bao tirelessly cares for her night and day. After recovering, Shen Xiu undergoes a transformation. As her sorrow eases, she begins to reassess Hao Bao. As her understanding deepens, admiration for Hao Bao slowly grows in Shen Xiu's heart. By this time, the farm has improved significantly. When Shen Xiu finally accepts her feelings for Hao Bao, years of military service have taken a toll on him, and he falls ill. Knowing his condition is severe, he doesn't want to burden Shen Xiu and gradually distances himself from her.
