This TV series is adapted from the classic novel "Romance of the Fallen City" by legendary Chinese writer Eileen Chang.

In the 1930s, in Shanghai. The Bai family, who were once extremely wealthy as former Qing dynasty scholars, had been declining year by year, spending their fortune until it was almost gone. Their situation became so bad that they struggled with daily life. Miss Bai Liusu's marriage was arranged, and Grandma Bai tried to arrange a decent wedding by asking for money from all the branches of the family. Cousins Three Bai Liangyue and Four Bai Liangyou both evaded responsibility, arguing over small sums of money. This made Bai Liusu realize the coldness of the world for the first time.

Bai Liusu married Tang Yiyuan, the son of one of the richest families in Shanghai at the time, which caused a sensation. The cunning Tang Lao Ye wanted to add "nobility" to his wealth, so he arranged this feudal marriage for his son. Bai Liusu wanted to escape the declining Bai mansion, but she only jumped from one cage into another pit of fire. When Fan Liu Yuan was at his lowest point in life, he met the gentle and kind Hong Lian. They fell deeply in love, but Hong Lian's brother opposed their relationship. Meanwhile, Fan Liu Yuan befriended Qiu, an outstanding lawyer who lived in poverty. With Qiu's help, Fan Liu Yuan went to England, enduring many hardships to obtain proof of his birth and win the lawsuit over his inheritance, inheriting millions of dollars overnight. However, when Fan Liu Yuan returned to Hong Kong, Hong Lian had already married someone else under pressure from her brother, breaking Fan Liu Yuan's heart. Hong Lian was unhappy after marriage and soon fell ill and died, making her death a permanent pain in Fan Liu Yuan's heart. From then on, Fan Liu Yuan became cynical and played around with women.

Xu, whose life Fan Liu Yuan once saved, saw this and wanted to help Fan Liu Yuan resolve his inner conflicts. She bravely set off alone to send her biological mother's ashes back home, losing contact with her family. Upon hearing the news, Bai Liusu was anxious and wanted to rush back to Shanghai.

The night before Bai Liusu returned to Shanghai, both she and Fan Liu Yuan were extremely complex in their feelings. Fan Liu Yuan called Bai Liusu but stubbornly refused to speak, and Bai Liusu almost surrendered. But her dignity ultimately triumphed over her impulsiveness.

Bai Liusu and Baoluo returned home at the same time. Liusu found that Baoluo had grown rapidly into a thoughtful and courageous girl through this adventure. She also fell in love with her savior, anti-Japanese officer Zhao Qiusheng. Baoluo resolutely followed Zhao Qiusheng to the rear hospital for the anti-Japanese resistance.
