Chris Gardner (Will Smith) is a smart and hardworking salesman who can't seem to provide a good life for his family despite all his efforts. His wife, Linda, eventually leaves him due to the stress of financial struggles, leaving him to raise their 5-year-old son, Christopher, alone.

With a failing career and now as a single father, Chris has only $21 left in his bank account and is evicted from their apartment for not being able to pay the rent.

Chris finally secures an internship at a prestigious stock investment company, but it comes with no salary, and only 10% of interns make it through successfully. However, Chris knows this is his last chance, the only path to a better life. With no income and nowhere to live, the only thing Chris has is his son's unconditional trust and love.

They sleep wherever they can find shelter - homeless shelters, subway stations, public restrooms - and during the day, when they don't have money for food, they stand in lines for charity meals and eat whatever barely fills their stomachs. Despite the despair brought on by poverty, for his son's future and his own beliefs, Chris grits his teeth and firmly believes: As long as he works hard today, happiness will come tomorrow! Eventually, his efforts pay off, and Chris becomes a successful investment expert.
