In the 1930s, in Shanghai, the Bai family, once extremely prosperous with their ancestry tracing back to the Qing dynasty's Hanlin Academy, has been declining year by year, living off their savings until they can barely afford daily life. In arranging a decent wedding for her sixth granddaughter Bai Liushu, Old Lady Bai had to ask all branches of the family for financial contributions.
