Lane 54 of Guangming Street was a common dead-end alley in Taipei during the 1980s. The few households living in this alley were particularly close-knit, including the Li family who ran an ice shop at the entrance, the Fang family whose father was a district officer, the Xiang family who operated a clinic, and the Chen family who harbored family secrets. Among these four families, there were pure Mainlanders, pure Taiwanese, half-and-half, and even some with Hakka ancestry. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they shared one commonality: each family had a daughter born in 1954 who garnered more attention than the sons.
Fang Zhongqiang (played by Na Weixun) and Xiang Guangzheng (played by Zhang Zhaozhi) were close buddies, but Guangzheng's fiancée Yuehua (played by Li Peizhen) ruined Zhongqiang and Baoqin's (played by Wang...) wedding night. Consequently, Baoqin and Yuehua fell out until three years later when Guangzheng moved his clinic across from Zhongqiang's house. On the same day, Baoqin and Yuehua both gave birth to daughters Yian (played by Bai Xinhuai) and Qianqian (played by Linda), respectively, which finally mended the two women’s relationship. Though relieved, the men knew that the hearts of women are as fathomless as the sea, and the two women still often quarreled over trivial matters.
Baoqin and Yuehua were delighted to have daughters, whereas Chen Jiamei (played by Xiu Qin), mother of the Chen family, felt disheartened after giving birth to Yuting (played by Li Jiayu). She believed that only having a son could slightly elevate her status as a concubine, a secret that couldn't be disclosed, leading to the rebellion of her eldest son Pinzhang (played by Li Yunqing).
Yian, Qianqian, and Yuting, the three girls, were all born in the same year when Taiwan's economy began self-sufficiency. However, from the moment of their births, the girls were destined to start life from different starting points.
The Fang family's daughter Yian inherited the tall and robust build of Shandong people. Her personality did not transform into a lady under her mother's strict upbringing; instead, she liked to take charge in everything, abundant in righteousness but lacking in judgment. The Xiang family's daughter Qianqian was the most beautiful, loved by everyone. As an only child, she was pampered by her parents, owning the first Barbie doll in Lane 54, with the world revolving around her. The Chen family's daughter Yuting had the most ordinary appearance but was the best student in Lane 54. Unfortunately, her mother was an unnamed concubine, growing up in a male-preferred household. She silently bore the resentment her mother vented on her, feeling inferior and voiceless.
At the age of ten, the three girls with vastly different personalities formed a bond. Yian stood up for Qianqian to retrieve her beloved Barbie doll, teaming up with Pinzhang to give Chengcai (played by Hao Shaowen), a little tyrant, a head wound, thus becoming famous in Lane 54. From then on, Yian, Qianqian, and Yuting swore to support each other forever and never separate. Just as everyone thought Yian was the children's leader of the lane, the mysterious Li family moved into Lane 54. Pefen (played by Dai Junzhu), seemingly possessing mysterious powers, was smart and optimistic, refusing to bow down to adversity. She won everyone's admiration by retrieving their first earned money, gradually becoming an idol to many. Thus, the four girls of Lane 54 embraced their shining days amidst the tides of time, and their stories began...
