Introduction to the plot of "Romance of the Besieged City":

In the 1930s, in Shanghai. The Bai family, once a prominent Qing dynasty scholar family, had been declining year after year, living off their past glories, with their fortunes so diminished that even daily life was becoming increasingly difficult. For the wedding of Miss Bai Liushu, the sixth daughter of the Bai family, Old Lady Bai sought contributions from various branches of the family to arrange a decent ceremony. However, the third uncle Bai Liangyue and the fourth uncle Bai Liangyong's families shirked responsibility, and there were constant squabbles between the sisters-in-law over petty accounts. This was Bai Liushu’s first experience of the cold realities of the world. Bai Liushu married into the Tang family, one of the richest families in Shanghai at the time, to marry Master Tang Yiyuan, an event that caused quite a stir.
