The film will feature through its lavish cinematography the process of Zhao Zilong, over 80 years old, leading Zhang Fei and Guan Yu's sons in beginning a northern expedition to achieve the unification of the Three Kingdoms, a feat that Liu Bei was unable to complete. Over a time span of more than 60 years, the movie travels through time and space, showcasing famous battles from the era of the Three Kingdoms, such as the Battle of Red Cliffs and the Battle of Changban, through Zhao Zilong's recollections.

Andy Lau Gets His Wish to Play Zhao Yun

Andy Lau expressed that he had read the comic version of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" when he was young, and portraying the intelligent and brave Zhao Yun, also known as 'the man of valor from Changshan', has been his childhood dream. Now, he finally gets to fulfill this wish in "The Kite Runner". Sammo Hung will serve as the film's action director and also make a cameo appearance as Zhang Fei. Meanwhile, the renowned mixed-race model Maggie Q, who has recently been frequently involved in Hollywood blockbusters, plays a new character in the film - Cao Ying, the granddaughter of Cao Cao. In the movie, she will share a wartime romance with Zhao Yun. It is reported that another key role, Zhou Yu, is likely to be played by Leon Lai.

Character Design Inspired by Games

Director Andrew Lau, who also serves as the screenwriter for this film, revealed that much of the inspiration for the characters and their appearances comes from KOEI's "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" game series from Japan. "Zhao Yun was merely one of Shu's generals in historical texts, a level below Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan, but he is the most familiar figure to today's youth..."
