Introduction:
"The Journey to the East" tells the story of a Shandong family who were forced to leave their hometown and "venture to the East" due to living difficulties, from the late Qing Dynasty to the outbreak of the September 18th Incident. The complicated and bumpy life of the protagonist Zhu Kaishan serves as the main thread, interwoven with the various trials and tribulations encountered by his three sons, each with distinct personalities and fates, on the journey to the East. During the script planning stage, it was positioned as a story of small characters becoming great heroes. "Venturing to the East" was a national behavior under the specific historical background of the Chinese nation, a forced large-scale national migration. The journey to the East required enduring countless hardships, including encounters with bandits, soldiers, landlords, local tyrants, thugs, vagrants, kind people, prostitutes, drug addicts, miners, and other characters, creating all kinds of difficulties for the Shandong men. Under these sufferings, the joys and sorrows among Zhu's father and sons, brothers, and couples are portrayed. This story design shares similarities with Hollywood blockbusters like "The Lord of the Rings" and also resembles the classical Chinese literature "Journey to the West," indicating that the basic understanding of human nature in Chinese and Western film and television culture is the same. As the saying goes, when masters spar, they only need to touch lightly; plucking flowers or flying leaves may seem similar, but the inner strength has its own unique charm.
The large-scale TV series "The Journey to the East," jointly produced by the Shandong Film and Television Drama Production Center and Dalian Television Station, has entered the intensive preparation stage for filming in Beijing. The Shandong Film and Television Drama Production Center invited renowned screenwriters Gao Mantang and Sun Jianye, known for works such as "Nine Sisters at Home" and "Lao Gen 3," to take the lead in writing, aiming to truly restore that tragic, desolate, grand, and heroic chapter of national blood and tears. In the creation process, they focus on capturing the historical texture and re-examine the warmth and coldness of human relationships and the vicissitudes of life during that period from a contemporary perspective.
To capture the grand and profound sense of history, the investors have spared no expense, setting a new record for TV drama investments in 2006. The series will recreate large scenes from the past, such as rafting, logging, gold panning, and mining, with locations spanning half of China. Coordinating these scenes poses a significant challenge. However, the leadership of the Shandong Film and Television Drama Production Center expressed confidence that this series would rank in the top three of annual TV drama viewership ratings, offering another visual feast for a wide audience.
