Introduction:

"The Fast Runner on the Icefield" is an ancient folklore passed down among the "Inuit" people. The story takes place near Igloolik (the far east of Baffin Island in northern Canada, a region that is frozen all year round) on the vast ice fields at the western boundary of the Arctic. After the leader of the local nomadic camp was murdered, the community was shocked. The new leader, Sauli, hunted his long-time enemy Tulima in a cruel and taunting manner, sowing the seeds for future conflicts. Time flies, and it's once again time for a change in power. Tulima, who died with a grudge, had two sons who have now grown up to be talented individuals: Magga, known as the strongest man on the island, and Atanarjuat, nicknamed the "fast runner," both are top hunters among their people. Sauli has a son named Oki, who likes to show off his authority. He was betrothed to Atu from infancy, but when they grew up, Atu fell in love with Atanarjuat instead, making Oki even more dissatisfied with Atanarjuat, whom he already envied. Eventually, Oki challenged Atanarjuat to a fight. In the wrestling match over the marriage, Atanarjuat won and married Atu. Time flew by, and Atanarjuat and Atu had a child. When Atanarjuat decided to go on a solo trip far away to hunt deer, he also married another wife, Puja (Oki's sister), which set the stage for trouble to come. One day, Oki ambushed the two brothers while they were sleeping. As a result, Magga was brutally killed, while Atanarjuat narrowly escaped, running barefoot across the ice field. Oki and his men chased him relentlessly. Shocked and tested by the harsh environment and treacherous terrain, Atanarjuat's frostbitten and bleeding feet quickly drained his strength. Finally, unable to continue, he collapsed, seemingly destined to die with regret...
