[Let's Debate] The "Simplified" vs "Traditional" Characters Controversy in Chinese Writing

Although the 2009 "two sessions" have come to an end, the proposal by CPPCC member Pan Qinglin that suggested phasing out simplified Chinese characters in batches over a period of ten years has reignited a new round of debates both at home and abroad. Some people believe that traditional characters embody the classical beauty of traditional Chinese culture, condense the wisdom of the Chinese nation, and reflect the long history of a national culture, whereas simplified characters lack this essence. Others, however, argue that simplified characters are the inevitable trend of progress, are easier to write, and can improve work efficiency, among other points.
