Xu Wanjian, the heroine of the novel, is a woman struggling in the whirlpool of material and spiritual conflicts. Both she and her husband were dancers in the military district. Though poor, they were a happy couple. In order to let their family live a decent life, she divorced her husband and married a wealthy American man whom she met by chance. During more than ten years, she made money silently and immigrated her husband and children to the United States. Subconsciously, they expected to save money to buy their own house and then kick the old man out to live a materially rich life on their own. But in fact, they can't do it. The husband spent all his wife's money but failed in investment, so he had to return to China in disappointment. However, Wanjian has to continue to suffer in despair, for her daughter or something she herself doesn't even know.
