Experts and institutions in the global life science community are working on an unprecedented multinational collaborative project to create a comprehensive, fully open Internet database of the 1.8 million animals, plants and organisms known to live on Earth. The Encyclo pedia of Life (EOL) project has been in operation since 2005, and the website (http://www.eol.org) is now in rough shape, with the main structure expected to be completed in 2008 and ready around 2017.
