Water flows upward? ! Impossible liquid entity

This optical illusion image, named "Watch Escher’s Impossible Perpetual Motion Waterfall," was introduced in 1961 and suggests that water can flow upwards. Really?! In the case of this visual trick, it appears so. But over the decades, has anyone been able to create a real-life version of this illusion?

mcwolles successfully created a physical version of this illusion, and in the video, the water does indeed appear to flow upward and then cascade down as a small waterfall—impressive!
