On March 7, in the accident handling inquiry room of the Yulin Public Security Bureau Traffic Police Detachment No. 1 Brigade, Zhang Du insisted that he was not the perpetrator: "I have a clear conscience, and I am commemorating the legendary resistance against the Japanese invasion!" In order to completely break his "defenses," the police officers retrieved the electronic surveillance footage from near the accident scene: The footage showed that when the elderly person crossed the road, they collided with the front-left corner of a fast-turning bread van, causing the elderly person to fall down on the spot. This vehicle happened to be the one driven by Zhang Du.

"At the time, I thought about it - aren't newspapers and magazines full of stories of heroic acts? Everyone saw it, so if it wasn't me who knocked him down, then there wouldn't be any problems, right?"

This incident drew significant attention from netizens, with some even urging the traffic police department to "return the car to the owner," which caused considerable interference for the authorities still investigating the case. Vice Mayor of Yulin and Director of the Public Security Bureau, Xu Jianzhong, also demanded that the traffic police quickly uncover the truth and handle the matter impartially and according to the law.

In the post, "Zhang Du" compared himself to the Guangxi version of "Xu Yunhe," lamenting repeatedly that he should not have helped the elderly person and calling on society to restore his innocence and fairness. On March 5, a reporter from a Yulin newspaper also published an article titled "Was It a Collision or Assistance? Farmer Zhang Du from Baise Is Recently Troubled" on the Red Bean Community forum and their personal blog.
