Many friends may have such concerns: the tattoos they once thought were beautiful and individualistic now need to be removed due to work or love-related reasons. So, what methods can remove these tattoos? For this, we consulted experts from Han's Plastic Surgery in Jinan. Let’s take a look at the expert’s relevant introduction.

To remove a tattoo, you can first choose laser treatment based on the tattoo color, and if it's ineffective, then consider surgery. Generally speaking, if laser treatment four to five times shows no effect, it should not be continued. There have been studies in this area showing that after five treatments, there is almost no effect, and after five treatments, surgery should be considered. The downside is that it may leave scars.

If choosing surgical treatment, it depends on the size, range, and shape of your tattoo. If it is long and narrow or relatively small, it can be directly excised and sutured, with external application of Kelo-cote to prevent scarring after suture removal. Three months to half a year later, the incision scar can be treated with dermabrasion, which can be performed every three months, two to four times making the scar less noticeable.

For larger areas, excision and skin grafting, staged excision, or using a tissue expander can be done. Of course, this method leaves more obvious scars. Therefore, it is best to try laser treatment first, with surgery as the last option. If the tattoo is shallow, you can also try dermabrasion.

Common methods for laser tattoo removal:

(1) For those who need removal for aesthetic purposes, a scalpel can be used for surgical excision, followed by skin grafting and plastic surgery if the area is large.

(2) For those who do not need removal for aesthetic purposes, electrolysis and chemical corrosion methods can be used for smaller areas.

(3) Currently, skin friction techniques or their improved versions are also widely used, using salt as the abrasive agent. The disadvantage is that it generally cannot remove all pigments and may leave disfiguring scars and/or pigmentation, but for some time after the surgery, the pigmentation may fade spontaneously.

(4) Laser treatment also has good therapeutic effects. Laser treatment for pigmentation, tattoos, and eyebrow tattoos shows significant results, with minimal side effects, short treatment time, and simple postoperative care for the affected area.
