Police officer injured while upholding the law, driver detained for 10 days
At around 7:20 AM on December 13th, Officer Fan from the Yaohai traffic squad was on duty at the intersection of Linquan East Road and Zhantang Road when he noticed a minivan running a red light. He immediately signaled for the vehicle to pull over and asked the driver, Mr. Hu, to present his driver's license and vehicle registration. After some hesitation, Mr. Hu handed over his driver's license but informed the officer that he did not have the vehicle registration with him.
An unexpected scene then unfolded as Mr. Hu took his son out of the car and instructed him, "Go hug that policeman." The boy complied with his father's request, tightly hugging the officer's right leg. Meanwhile, Mr. Hu attacked the officer from the left side and tore his reflective vest. Due to the child firmly holding onto the officer's leg, considering the child's safety, the officer remained mostly stationary until several bystanders intervened and pulled the driver away.
The minivan had been caught running a red light and the driver attempted to flee.
According to reports, there was a six-year-old boy inside the vehicle. The officer told Mr. Hu, "Take your child to school first, then come back to handle this matter." Unexpectedly, Mr. Hu became emotionally agitated and insisted on retrieving his driver's license. When the officer refused, Mr. Hu rushed out of the car, hugged the officer, snatched the driver's license from his hands, returned to the vehicle, and was about to drive off before being stopped by onlookers and the duty officer.
After reinforcements from the traffic squad and Fangmiao police station arrived at the scene, the situation was fully brought under control, and Mr. Hu was taken to the police station for further processing.
Upon hospital examination, Officer Fan sustained multiple soft tissue injuries on the left side of his body but fortunately, there were no major issues. On the same day, the Fangmiao police station sentenced driver Hu for obstructing official duties with an administrative detention of 10 days.
