The mandible swing approach for the resection of Shamblin type III and giant carotid body tumors involves disconnecting the mandible after vascular reconstruction, reducing it, and fixing it with a plate to avoid affecting mandibular function and surface shape postoperatively. In this group of patients, a mandibular truncated ladder split is performed to avoid injury to the inferior alveolar nerve, maintain muscle tension on the floor of the mouth, increase bilateral interleaved forces between the mandibles, and ensure plate retention without dislocation of the mandible. Although surgery for Shamblin type III carotid body tumors carries certain risks, according to the treatment experience of this group, as long as there is correct preoperative diagnosis and assessment of carotid artery function, appropriate surgical decisions are made, the operation field is fully revealed, careful operations are conducted, and the carotid artery is reconstructed, complications can be avoided or significantly reduced in severity.
