In 1948, Hans, who was still a student, received this jar of lard in the city of Rostock in northern Germany. After testing, the German food safety department said that although the lard looked a bit solidified and its flavor had weakened, it was still edible.

Nowadays, when people go shopping, they carefully check the production date and shelf life of goods. The storage period for canned lard will not exceed five years. However, recently, an elderly man in Germany took a jar of lard that had been stored for 64 years to an authoritative department for inspection. The results were surprising: the lard was still edible.

According to the Daily Mail website on February 3, this elderly man is named Hans Feldmeier and he is 87 years old. In 1948, while still a student, Hans received a jar of lard, two cans of canned noodles, and some milk in the city of Rostock in northern Germany. These foods were all part of the aid supplies provided by the United States after World War II.

Hans said: "I always couldn't bear to throw it away." When the food safety department stated that the lard was still edible, the old man felt very surprised and excited, and even tried eating a little with a slice of black bread.

The food safety department explained that although this jar of lard appeared somewhat solidified and naturally the taste had also weakened, its freshness and ingredient composition still met current food safety standards, so it could be served on the dining table.

"This result may make some consumers reconsider before throwing away expired food," Hans joked.
