The project manager of the construction site said that he had heard about the beating, and the money had already been settled with the foreman. The wages were eight or nine thousand yuan instead of more than 80,000 yuan. Because they were migrant workers, no fraud charges were filed against them.
Reported by Henan Business Daily reporter Li Jiangrui - Having already bought train tickets for the Little New Year’s Eve to go home, several Chongqing migrant workers had to stay in Zhengzhou because they did not receive their wages on time. Chen Zujian went to the construction site to claim his wages at noon the day before yesterday, and was beaten up by a group of "people he didn't know."
Leak: "I represented the migrant workers to go to the construction site to claim wages, and I got beaten."
On the evening of January 16, the Little New Year's Eve, Chen Zujian lay on a hospital bed at the Fifth People's Hospital of Zhengzhou with bloodstains on his scalp.
"I represented the migrant workers to go to the construction site to claim wages, and I got beaten," Chen Zujian said. They were a group of sixteen or seventeen people from Chongqing who worked at the Phase II construction site of China Construction Seventh Engineering Bureau's Yindi Tianjiao Huating located 300 meters west of the intersection of Huayuan Road and Nongke Road in Zhengzhou since August 2011.
Chen Zujian said that this time they should have received more than 80,000 yuan in wages. At noon the day before yesterday, he went to the construction site to find the project manager, "They promised me that they would resolve the wage issue today."
Chen Zujian said that around 2 p.m., after coming out from "coordinating" in the office of the project department, more than ten people surrounded him, said nothing, and started hitting him, then dispersed after the beating.
Li Yuanjun, lying on the hospital bed alongside Chen Zujian, is a fellow townsman of Chen Zujian. He said, "When we saw the fight break out, my wife and I went forward to pull them apart, and as a result, we both got hit."
According to Chen Zujian, the police came twice before and after he was beaten, "Before I was beaten, I had a few words with the people from the project department, and the police came to mediate, telling me not to cause trouble. When I was beaten, the police were not there."
Regarding the detailed handling of the incident by the police at that time, the officers from the Dongfeng Road Police Station of Zhengzhou City said, "We will ask about it."
Construction Site Project Department: Wages are eight or nine thousand yuan, not more than 80,000 yuan
In the afternoon yesterday, Zhang Zhongshan, the manager of the Phase II construction site project department of "China Construction Seventh Engineering Bureau Yindi Tianjiao Huating", said that he did not see Chen Zujian being beaten, he just heard about it.
"Their foreman is named Zhou Chengdong, and the wages have already been settled with him. Their wages are eight or nine thousand yuan, not more than 80,000 yuan. You should look for the one surnamed Zhou," Zhang Zhongshan said. When the police came to mediate that day, they asked him if he wanted to file fraud charges against them, "I said they are all migrant workers, let it go."
However, Chen Zujian and others also found the foreman Zhou Chengdong, and Zhou Chengdong's response was that the wages should be issued by the project department.
Migrant Workers: Just want to get the wages and go home quickly
"We should have received more than 80,000 yuan in wages. So many people have been working since August last year until now. We came to claim once before, and the project manager replied that it would be resolved this Monday, so I went over there," Chen Zujian said. Others had already bought train tickets for Monday, preparing to go home after receiving the wages that day.
Chen Zujian said, "When I was beaten, the project manager Zhang Zhongshan was at the scene." But among the people who hit him, Chen Zujian did not recognize any of them.
"After being beaten, I called 110. After the police came, they went to the office once, then asked for my name and address, and left," Chen Zujian said. He just wants to get the wages and go home quickly, but now they can only lie in the hospital, unable to receive either the wages or money for treatment.
