New Express News - Reported by journalist Liu Qian and correspondent from Guangzhou Procuratorate Publicity Department: Zhang Mingwen, the suspect who plotted to kill the victim, dismembered the body, and also raped the victim's girlfriend, was sentenced to death with a reprieve. Due to doubts about the case, the Guangzhou People's Procuratorate legally filed a protest. After the trial, the Guangdong Higher People's Court legally changed Zhang Mingwen's sentence to immediate execution. This was disclosed during the "Procuratorate Open Day" at the Guangzhou People's Procuratorate as the first case in Guangzhou where a suspended death sentence was changed to immediate execution.
It is understood that on June 21, 2006, the Luogang District Public Security Bureau received a public report and discovered the torso of a male corpse in a sewer on the east side of Kaitai Avenue in Science City, without a head or limbs. On the morning of June 24, after a thorough search, two packages of body parts were found in the grass on the east side of Kaitai Avenue, containing both thighs and a left hand. DNA tests confirmed they belonged to the same person as the torso found on June 21.
On July 27, after investigation, the police arrested two suspects, Qiu Yuguo and Zhang Mingwen. After an overnight interrogation, Qiu Yuguo confessed to the crime of killing Wu某某 and raping his girlfriend with Zhang Mingwen.
The Guangzhou People's Procuratorate legally prosecuted the case, sentencing defendant Zhang Mingwen to death with a reprieve in the first instance, while Qiu Yuguo, considered an accomplice, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. After reviewing the case, the Guangzhou People's Procuratorate believed the punishment was too lenient. The defendants, Qiu Yuguo and Zhang Mingwen, had conspired to kill the victim Wu某某. Under the condition that only Wu某某 and his girlfriend Yang某某 were present, Qiu Yuguo secretly notified Zhang Mingwen to come and commit the murder. During the murder, Qiu Yuguo held down Wu某某 and controlled Yang某某, making him the principal offender rather than an accomplice. Therefore, a legal protest was filed. After the trial, the Guangdong Higher People's Court legally changed Zhang Mingwen's sentence to immediate execution and sentenced Qiu Yuguo to life imprisonment.
It is claimed that this case is also the first in Guangzhou where a suspended death sentence was changed to immediate execution.
