It can be forseen that as stainless steel becomes more and more common in households, this quality material will play a role in more fields. Currently, stainless steel water pipes have been used to renovate the water pipes at Beijing's Great Hall of the People and Zhongnanhai, 304L stainless steel sheet has been used in the Zhujiang New Town Development Zone and University City construction projects in Guangzhou, as well as in some development zones in Fuzhou, Xian, Changsha and other areas, and it will also be widely used in Olympic facilities. Li Cheng, president of the Stainless Steel Branch of China Special Steel Enterprise Association introduced that stainless steel water pipes have many advantages. The biggest advantage is hygiene and environmental protection (stainless steel is a 100% recyclable product), as well as long service life (generally reaching 80 to 100 years). Stainless steel water pipes are the best direct drinking water delivery pipe materials. In addition, the leakage rate of stainless steel water pipes is very low, which can save valuable water resources. Japan's water pipe leakage rate was around 17% in the 1980s, but after switching to stainless steel water pipes, the leakage rate dropped to 7%. During the Hanshin earthquake in Japan, the local water supply system was damaged, but the stainless steel water pipe system remained intact. Compared with copper water pipes, stainless steel water pipes have good water flow properties and do not corrode even at high flow rates. Its thermal insulation is 24 times that of copper pipes. In recent years, antibacterial stainless steel has become the new favorite of the stainless steel family. It is made by adding some antibacterial elements such as copper and silver to stainless steel and then undergoing special treatment. This excellent antibacterial self-cleaning property indicates its application prospects are very broad. For example: now the cost of a pair of disposable wooden chopsticks used in restaurants is one mao, and the annual cost per person is over one hundred yuan. However, a pair of chopsticks made from antibacterial stainless steel costs only about two yuan, and if used for five years, a pair of chopsticks can save around five hundred yuan. In the past, only Japan could produce antibacterial stainless steel. In 2002, Zhejiang Tianbao Stainless Steel Company developed Chinese-characteristic antibacterial stainless steel, which has now formed batch production and entered the market. The biggest issue affecting the application of stainless steel water pipes is cost. According to estimates, the one-time investment cost of stainless steel water pipes is about three times that of ordinary galvanized pipes, and about 50% higher than PVC and other composite water pipes. However, if the entire life cycle cost of the building is taken into account, the cost advantage of stainless steel is very obvious. Currently, the design life of buildings in our country is generally 70 years, while the life of ordinary galvanized pipes is only 10 to 20 years, and the cost of replacing pipelines far exceeds the initial investment. Considering comprehensively, the life cycle cost of stainless steel water pipes is about 1/4 lower than that of galvanized pipes. Another application area is construction, especially public facilities such as bridges. Ordinary rebar has poor corrosion resistance, so bridges and other facilities need major repairs every 20 years or so. For example, a certain overpass in Beijing had to be scrapped and rebuilt after just twenty years due to rebar corrosion and expansion. On the other hand, stainless steel rebar has excellent corrosion resistance, resulting in very low maintenance costs throughout the entire life cycle of the bridge. If considering the entire life cycle, its cost is the lowest. When talking about stainless steel, people often think of stainless steel tableware and kitchen utensils in their homes, shiny railings on the street, and decorations on the surfaces of buildings. In fact, as an excellent functional material and structural material, stainless steel can play a role in both industrial and construction fields, and its application areas are becoming increasingly extensive.
