37 Years of Devotion - Younger Sister-in-law Tenders to Paralyzed Brother
Such stories are not uncommon, but each time we hear them, they deeply move us.
Wang Bailiang, 54 years old, an ordinary woman from Changjiang Village in Luyaodu Town, Taojiang County, has been taking care of her paralyzed brother-in-law Xiao Jubing since marrying into the family 37 years ago. She has done so without any regret or complaint, and her story has become a well-known legend in her neighborhood.
Forty years ago, Xiao Jubing was paralyzed after suffering a spinal injury while building a house for the production team. At that time, his mother had already passed away, leaving him dependent on his younger brother Xiao Judong and their nearly seventy-year-old father for care. Three years later, their father also passed away, and Wang Bailiang entered the family, shouldering the responsibility of caring for Xiao Jubing.
Becoming a family is fate; it must be cherished.
In early September, as the weather began to cool slightly, 59-year-old Xiao Jubing lay on his side in his room, occasionally lifting his head to look out the window for any changes outside. At this moment, his younger sister-in-law had already changed his thin cotton quilt and bedding to make him more comfortable. With the changing seasons and the thoughtful care of his family, the days spent bedridden have become less arduous for him.
Having been bedridden for forty years, Xiao Jubing's clothes are clean, his face shows no sign of fatigue or illness, and he hasn't even grown many white hairs. All of this is due to the meticulous care provided by his family.
Every morning, after washing up, the first thing Wang Bailiang does is bring water for her elder brother to wash his face, a habit she has maintained for many years. Bringing tea and meals to her elder brother and changing his clothes are essential daily tasks for her.
In this humble home, there is a special bamboo chair. The bamboo chair is large and wide, with a long backrest and no seat board. Its four legs are surrounded by wooden boards, filled with soft cotton padding in the middle. "He has been paralyzed for many years, and his lower body has become so thin that only bones remain; he can't sit on regular chairs," Wang Bailiang said. To take care of her elder brother, her husband specially made this chair so that he could occasionally sit down for a meal instead of lying down all day.
Ten years ago, Xiao Jubing started experiencing incontinence. Wang Bailiang patiently washed and changed her elder brother's clothes without complaint. Once, a relative stayed at Wang Bailiang's house for some time and offered to help wash clothes. When the relative picked up Xiao Jubing's dirty pants, they couldn't help but vomit. Wang Bailiang quickly took over and washed them herself.
Wang Bailiang suffers from diabetes and often endures discomfort without going to the hospital for check-ups. However, whenever her elder brother feels unwell, she invites the village doctor to come to their home. In this rural woman's view, her elder brother has suffered from illness for most of his life, and he deserves to be well cared for to ensure his comfort.
Wang Bailiang has a fiery personality and speaks rapidly like a machine gun, and though she may have a short temper sometimes, she never loses her temper with her elder brother. "I can get angry with anyone else, but I can't lose my temper with him. He has endured more suffering than all of us!" Wang Bailiang said that becoming a family is a bond formed from past lives, and it must be treasured.
Rather than save money for herself, she insists on not letting her elder brother go without.
At Xiao Jubing's bedside, there is always a set of remote control keys. With just a press of a button while lying in bed, he can open or close the door of the house.
In this not-so-affluent rural family, spending thousands of yuan to install an electric roller shutter door was solely for the convenience of the bedridden Xiao Jubing. If friends visit or he wants to see the road and passing vehicles outside, Xiao Jubing doesn't need to struggle to get up to open the door.
In the corner of Xiao Jubing's room, there is also a white porcelain flush toilet. This flush toilet has accompanied him for eight years and remains as white as new.
Xiao Jubing said that the flush toilet was specially bought and installed by his younger sister-in-law with pipes, costing several hundred yuan. "At that time, our newly built house didn't even have enough money to paint the walls, but she insisted on buying me this." With the flush toilet, Xiao Jubing found it much more convenient and hygienic to use the bathroom, and the unpleasant smell disappeared from the room. A year later, the family finally had enough money to paint the walls.
Considering that Xiao Jubing might feel bored being alone, his room was equipped with a color TV and DVD player, and the family often watched TV with him. Wang Bailiang said that even if she had to live frugally herself, she would ensure that her elder brother lived comfortably and wouldn't let him down.
Niece-in-law takes over the care of her uncle, passing on true feelings.
For decades, Wang Bailiang and her husband worked hard, and their two children have now married and settled down. What makes Wang Bailiang happy is that after her daughter-in-law joined the family, she began to take over the care of the paralyzed uncle, serving him tea, drawing water, washing clothes, and cooking meals, doing everything without complaint. When the uncle's TV broke, she voluntarily went to town to buy a new one.
On a daily basis, when the children go shopping or return from trips, they always bring back some nutritional supplements for their uncle. Every time Wang Bailiang sees such scenes, her heart feels as sweet as honey.
Wang Bailiang said that she and her husband plan to buy a specially designed wheelchair for her elder brother, pushing him around to see different places.
