Yesterday, the suspect was taken back to the jewelry store for on-site identification. The Changde Municipal Public Security Bureau provided the photo. Correspondent Linfang Wu reported from Changde:
At around 9 a.m. yesterday, a dramatic "life-and-death race" between police, civilians, and a robber unfolded on the streets of Changde. A man armed with a gun robbed a jewelry store located at Nanmen on Renmin Road, taking gold jewelry worth more than 550,000 yuan. After struggling with the jewelry store employees, the man fled but was eventually caught by the police in a garbage can in a residential area.
The jewelry store in the bustling downtown area was suddenly attacked.
Through surveillance video, it is clearly visible that at 8:47 a.m. yesterday, as the Peijia Jewelry Changde branch was preparing to open for business, a bag-carrying man entered the store and walked to the gold jewelry counter. Then he revealed his true nature, pulling out a pistol and loudly ordering everyone not to move. The female store manager said that upon seeing the gun in the hands of the robber, she immediately crouched down. At this point, the robber began smashing the glass cabinets with a nail hammer and putting the gold jewelry into a bag.
"I immediately called for help because our company is upstairs," said the female store manager. Upon receiving the message, the employees upstairs rushed down immediately. As the armed robber was about to leave, he was attracted by a large gold gemstone ring inside the counter. Greedily, the robber returned to take this gemstone ring and used an iron hammer to smash the nearby counter glass. Just then, one of the employees who had arrived hit the robber on the head with an iron lock. Another female employee saw this and rushed forward to grab the robber and attempt to seize the gun. The robber pushed the female employee to the ground and smashed the gun towards her before escaping through the door and fleeing the jewelry store. The employees chased him fiercely while shouting, "Catch the robber!"
In panic, the robber jumped from the third floor.
"Someone is robbing, someone is robbing, stop him quickly!" At 8:50 a.m. yesterday, Deputy Chief Cheng Zhenhua of the Chengnan Police Station under the Wuling Branch of the Changde Municipal Public Security Bureau and the officers heard someone shouting while patrolling the street. They saw a man running along Minzhu Street and heading south through a side street. Without hesitation, Cheng Zhenhua and the other officers started chasing him.
After chasing about 500 meters, they were close to catching the man when suddenly, a 110 police car sped toward them, blocking the man's escape route. He turned and ran into a dormitory building within a unit compound, then jumped onto a wall from the third floor and climbed over the wall into another residential community. Without thinking twice, Cheng Zhenhua, along with three or four male employees who were chasing and some citizens who spontaneously joined in capturing the robber, leapt from the first floor after him. However, just as the pursuing officer jumped into the neighborhood, the robber vanished from sight.
The police and citizens quickly conducted a search of the residential area and finally tracked the suspect based on bloodstains on the ground. Eventually, the suspect was pulled out of a trash can in a secluded corner by Cheng Zhenhua and the police officers along with the citizens, and the stolen gold jewelry was recovered on the spot.
According to eyewitnesses, they only saw the police and citizens chasing the man, who was still holding a gun and a nail hammer. A property security guard, hearing the news of the robbery, tried to intercept the man when he noticed that the man was covered in blood. But upon hearing the man yell, "If you block me, I'll shoot you!" and seeing the weapons in his hand, the guard dared not intervene anymore.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, Chen Mou, is from Xinhua County, Hunan Province, and is 21 years old. The gun he held was a black plastic one. Chen had previously robbed two jewelry stores in Ningxiang, Changsha, and Changde in September and October last year, involving gold jewelry worth about 800,000 yuan. On the afternoon of February 7, Chen came to Changde again from Xinhua, planning a big heist. Unexpectedly, he was caught right after attempting the robbery. Currently, the case is under further investigation.
