Illness strikes a happy family
Fu Guangbin and his wife worked hard despite not being rich, leading a full and happy life. However, an unexpected illness struck this originally happy family.
Last winter, Fu Guangbin started feeling unwell, with general fatigue and increasing weight loss. After checking into the hospital after the 2011 Spring Festival, he was diagnosed with leukemia.
Upon hearing this news, Fu Guangbin's mother fainted with grief. A few years prior, Fu Guangbin's elder sister had passed away due to lung cancer. The tragedy of burying a child had already happened, and fate cruelly struck again, breaking the heart of the elderly woman.
The illness came fiercely, quickly leaving Fu Guangbin bedridden. He underwent chemotherapy and dialysis in the hospital, with daily medical expenses so high they were alarming. The harsh reality of poverty caused by illness deeply pained this family. Due to this disease, all assets accumulated over more than ten years of marriage were sold: the bread van, the excavator, even the chicken coops used for raising chickens were sold.
The family could not watch him deteriorate towards death. They borrowed money from relatives and friends, even asking friends of their friends.
It wouldn't take long before their debts piled up. Fu Guangbin wanted to save money and discharged himself from the hospital, but after returning home for only a few days, his condition worsened. With no other choice, the family sent him back to the hospital.
Later, with the help of relatives and friends, Fu Guangbin transferred to the First Hospital of Peking University to prepare for a bone marrow transplant.
"I want to save my dad"
To conduct a bone marrow transplant, suitable bone marrow must first be found. There was no suitable match in the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank, making it most likely within blood-related individuals. Fu Guangbin's parents were too old for such a major surgery. Just as despair loomed, the doctor offered a glimmer of hope: "Could the child try?"
The child is only 15 years old. Would a bone marrow transplant affect his body? This was the first concern of the couple.
After several days of deliberation, until the doctor repeatedly assured them that there would be "no impact," Fu Guangbin called someone to bring Fu Chao from Zibo to Beijing. "Son, are you willing to save your dad?"
Without hesitation, Fu Chao immediately nodded: "I am willing." In the eyes of others, Fu Guangbin was just an ordinary farmer, but in the eyes of his son Fu Chao, his father was great. As long as he was around, the family would always be strong and warm.
Next came blood tests and other procedures. Fortunately, Fu Chao's bone marrow matched successfully with his father's.
On September 3rd and 4th, the doctors performed the bone marrow transplant surgery. Before the operation, Fu Chao consoled his parents: "Don't worry, I've seen it on TV. Bone marrow transplants have no effect on the body."
In fact, recalling the moment of the surgery, Fu Chao said that besides pain, he was also a bit afraid, tightly gripping his hand. But for the person who loved him the most, he felt this pain was worth it. "After all, he's still a child," said Fu Chao's grandparents. The surgery lasted more than two hours, and Fu Chao did not cry out once. "As long as it can cure my dad's illness, taking out a little more doesn't matter. I want to save my dad."
Post-surgery costs trouble the family
Currently, Fu Guangbin has ended more than 40 days of living in a sterile ward and has been transferred to a regular ward. His life has been saved, but due to the initial treatment costing over 400,000 yuan, there is no longer anyone willing to lend money for further treatment, plunging the family into difficulty. "Now we can't borrow a single cent. We already owe so much debt, who would dare lend us money!" On the morning of October 27th, when the reporter arrived at Fu Chao's house, his grandmother couldn't help but shed tears thinking about the difficulties of borrowing money. However, Fu Guangbin was still in the hospital, requiring daily expenses. These two elderly people had no economic source and were plagued by illnesses themselves. For this matter, she and her husband worried so much they couldn't sleep through the night.
Fu Chao is a student at Mengshui Middle School. When the school heard about his donation of bone marrow to save his father, teachers and students across the school donated generously, bringing over 20,000 yuan in donations to the family.
Fu Chao is currently in the fourth year of junior high school, with very tight courses. Due to his father's illness, he has missed many classes. To catch up, he needs to spend a lot of time catching up on his studies every day.
Fu Chao said that he hopes for good grades to make his father happy and to repay the teachers, classmates, and kind-hearted people who helped him.
Many kind-hearted people organized charity performances raising over 7,000 yuan, allowing this impoverished family to feel the warmth of society and see hope.
