Zheng started to冒领 (fraudulently claim) four credit cards in this manner and began making purchases. In just two or three months, he had accumulated over 100,000 yuan in overdraft charges. In May of this year, Zheng was arrested by the public security authorities and returned 9,940 yuan of the stolen funds.
According to Xinhua News Agency, on September 20th, the Qingyang District People's Court of Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, announced its verdict in a case involving the fraudulent acquisition and misuse of credit cards using network software and others' information. The defendant, Zheng, was sentenced in the first trial to 5 years and 4 months in prison for credit card fraud and fined 50,000 yuan.
In 2009, Zheng discovered that one could purchase others' personal information online, including names, ID numbers, workplace addresses, telephone numbers, and various other detailed information. At the beginning of this year, Zheng modified others' credit card information via the bank's credit card center telephone service. Since the incoming call displayed on the bank's phone would be from the customer themselves, and Zheng could provide detailed personal information, the bank was deceived. Additionally, when Zheng modified the information, he used software to temporarily block the SMS function of others' phones, preventing bank reminder messages from alerting the customers. Zheng's "caution" and the "help" of the software allowed him to smoothly change the information. One or two months later, he then requested replacement credit cards under the pretense of loss through telephone means.
