This gender discrimination case that has drawn nationwide attention in the U.S. dates back to 2001, with only six female employees eventually filing the lawsuit. Christie, now 46 years old, was one of the first to initiate the litigation. She began working at Walmart in 1986. By 2000, she had become the longest-serving hourly employee at her store but discovered that her salary was equal to male employees who had only half her tenure. Additionally, her requests for leadership positions were ignored, with these roles consistently being given to newly hired men.

Female employees at Walmart claim that over the years, they have received less pay and fewer promotion opportunities compared to male employees in the same positions. They are demanding that the U.S. Supreme Court allow them to sue Walmart as a class action. Data submitted by the defendants' lawyers show that women make up only 33% of Walmart's management while constituting 65% of its hourly-paid workforce. In most positions within the company, women earn less than men despite having longer tenures.

These female employees are demanding that Walmart compensate them for underpaid wages, provide punitive damages, and change its wage system to eliminate gender discrimination. Lawyers from the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union also submitted an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief to the Supreme Court, pointing out that evidence provided by the plaintiffs shows that Walmart's managers undervalue female employees and restrict their roles within the company through stereotypical concepts. These women should pursue a class-action lawsuit.

Walmart is the largest employer in the U.S., currently owning over 4,300 stores and employing 1.4 million people. American media predicts that if the court allows these female employees to proceed with a class-action lawsuit, this will become the largest such lawsuit regarding gender discrimination in U.S. history. Up to 1.6 million female employees who have worked at Walmart could join the class-action lawsuit, potentially resulting in billions of dollars in compensation for the company. This ruling would also set a precedent for future labor discrimination lawsuits.

However, legal experts in the U.S. believe that the Supreme Court traditionally has a "pro-business" bias, and it is likely that the court's decision will not support these female employees. Analysts point out that since the plaintiffs filed the lawsuit a decade ago, even if the court rules in favor of allowing the class-action lawsuit, Walmart might still adopt delay tactics.
