**Abstract:** Objective: To study the health status of residents in rural communities. In 1998, among rural residents of Huangcaoba, the prevalence of self-reported illness was 8.25%, and the rate of needing hospital treatment was 6.28%. These results showed no significant difference compared to the findings from China's poverty-stricken counties' research conducted in 1993. In 1998, 44% of self-reported patients did not seek medical care, and 16.28% of patients did not follow doctors' advice for hospital treatment. The main factors influencing the utilization of primary health care were poor economic conditions, lack of health awareness, and transportation problems.

**Conclusion:** The needs and utilization of rural primary health care are related to improvements in sanitary conditions, sufficient equipment, and other factors.

**Keywords:** Primary Health Care, Health Services, Rural Communities
