A recent study suggests that lack of sleep can lead to a decrease in testosterone levels in elderly men. Researchers tracked the sleep of 12 healthy men aged 64 to 74 for one night and measured their levels of testosterone, the primary male hormone. The results showed that merely reducing sleep could cause a decline in testosterone levels, which peak in the morning.

According to reports, testosterone is a steroidal hormone that plays an important role in libido, energy, muscle mass, bone density, and immune function. Scientists have already understood some of the relationships between sleep quality, aging, and sex hormones. For example, from the age of 20s or 30s, a man's testosterone level decreases by 1% to 2% annually; sleep deprivation in young men can lower sex hormone levels.

Lawrence Epstein, the director of the Division of Sleep Medicine at Brighton Sleep Health Center in Massachusetts and former president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, pointed out: "You might be surprised to know that sleep can affect hormone secretion and also impact factors we associate with aging." Therefore, instead of consuming large amounts of health supplements, people should allocate sufficient time for a good night's sleep.
