Beijing Outward Bound Company - Management Short Stories

During the outdoor team-building activities organized by the company in Beijing, such things often happen. When doing projects, participants would rather go to great lengths and lose sight of the main objectives than focus on doing what they are capable of first. They tend to complicate simple issues, which not only reduces efficiency but also leads to a lot of wasted effort. In the "Deserted Island Survival" project during the team-building training, participants often make this mistake. The general idea of Deserted Island Survival is to divide the participants into three groups, each placed on separate islands with a certain distance between them and no communication allowed. The roles played by these three islands are: blind people, mute people, and able-bodied people. Each island is given different task instructions, and the training goal is to rescue the people from the mute island and the blind island to the able-bodied island.

Participants in this project often encounter the aforementioned problems. What should be a very simple project becomes overly complicated due to overthinking, preventing the completion of tasks. The ultimate goal of Deserted Island Survival is rescue, as we've already mentioned. Each island has different task instructions to help with the rescue. The key to the rescue lies in special communication and rescue operations between the mute island and the able-bodied island using the information provided in the task instructions. However, participants often complete unrelated tasks listed in their task instructions before focusing on the rescue. Due to the limited time for completing the project, teams that make similar mistakes fail to complete the task, committing the error of losing sight of the main objective. After the team-building training is completed, the coach will summarize the experience for everyone. During the summary, the coach will provide some insights regarding this issue and tell a small story to deepen everyone's understanding of the problem, making it more memorable. This little story is shared here with everyone, and it goes something like this:

A long time ago, the zoo introduced many gorillas, which were very popular among visitors. But one morning, the zookeepers suddenly discovered that all the gorillas had escaped. They quickly reported the situation to the management, who took the matter seriously and held a meeting to discuss solutions. Everyone believed that the fence around the gorilla enclosure was too low, allowing the gorillas to escape. Therefore, the zoo decided to increase the height of the fence from 1 meter to 2 meters. However, the next day, the gorillas escaped again. So, they raised the fence from 2 meters to 5 meters. Surprisingly, on the third day, the gorillas escaped once more. Out of desperation, they increased the fence height to 50 meters. Yet, on the third day, the gorillas escaped again. The zookeepers overheard one of the escaped gorillas say, "Look at these zookeepers, why do they keep raising the height of my wall? But after raising it, why don't they lock the gate?"

Such phenomena occur not only frequently in our team-building training but also commonly in our work and daily lives. While we can understand and correct these issues during training, when they happen repeatedly in real-world work scenarios, we need to re-examine ourselves.
