The Peninsula Metropolis reported on January 11th (reporter Yue Wang) that a man named Jiang left his wife and toddler daughter and disappeared for three years. Afterwards, he cohabited with his girlfriend Cui under the guise of being married. Cui bore him a daughter, but eventually the truth came out. Jiang's wife found out and reported it to the police. Recently, in an unrelated incident, the man stabbed someone to death in a dispute over a hostess at a karaoke bar. After the first trial at the Licang Court, Jiang was sentenced to six months in prison for bigamy.
Jiang, 33 years old, is from Jiangsu province. Initially working in a supermarket, he met his wife Han through a friend's introduction. They quickly got married in 2003. Less than a year after their marriage, they had a daughter. Not long after the child was born, they started arguing over family trivialities. Jiang was particularly dissatisfied with Han's attitude towards his mother. In 2004, after a big argument, Han told Jiang to stay away from her. Jiang packed his bags and left home.
Afterwards, Jiang started a small business while Han raised their daughter alone. In 2007, Jiang met a woman surnamed Cui in his hometown in Jiangsu. Their relationship quickly "heated up." In 2008, Jiang's mother bought him a new house in Licang district, and Jiang began living with Cui as husband and wife. In 2009, Cui gave birth to a daughter. During this time, Jiang approached his wife Han wanting to negotiate a divorce, but Han did not agree. Soon, the news of Jiang "remarrying and having another child" reached Han, and on July 20, 2010, Han reported it to the police.
Recently, the Licang Court conducted the first trial of the case. In court, Jiang said: "I've lost hope in this marriage. We can't live together anymore, so I chose to escape!" Regarding his daughter, he expressed guilt and said he would take care of her in the future. The court believed that both spouses in a marital relationship have the obligation to actively maintain family harmony. In this case, Jiang leaving home exacerbated the family conflict, for which he bears responsibility.
Before his marriage was dissolved, Jiang cohabited with another person under the guise of being married and fathered a child. This not only severely harmed his spouse and legitimate children but also seriously disrupted the national marriage registration management order. It will also hinder the growth of his illegitimate child and negatively affect societal mores, thus having significant social repercussions. The court ruled in the first trial that Jiang, having a spouse but cohabiting with another person under the guise of being married, committed bigamy and sentenced him to six months in prison.
