Groupon, the pioneer of group-buying, has not developed smoothly in China since it entered the market with a high profile. Now, the large-scale layoffs at Gaopeng.com seem to be a foregone conclusion, even though the official side has not yet confirmed it, only citing normal personnel adjustments as the reason. However, from the accounts of employees, this "adjustment" is not quite normal.
Gaopeng.com's Zhejiang Ningbo station officially launched on May 18th. Xingyuan (a pseudonym) joined the Ningbo station on May 3rd. Xingyuan revealed that the entire interview process was not difficult, and two weeks later he was promoted from sales manager to sales director. However, misfortune soon followed, and contrary to the usual six-month probation period, Gaopeng suddenly issued him a dismissal notice and processed his resignation on August 5th.
"They informed me twice about the layoffs via email, and the reasons for the two notifications were completely different," Xingyuan disclosed to the IT Times reporter. The first notification stated it was due to company business adjustments, but Xingyuan did not sign at that time. Unexpectedly, two days later, he received another dismissal explanation, "The reason was truancy, tardiness, and early departure, but in fact, these did not exist." The reasons for dismissal could not convince Xingyuan. Moreover, Xingyuan stated that because he had signed a confidentiality agreement, he now dared not look for similar work, "And I am not familiar with other industries."
Another employee in the same situation is Ling Yifeng (a pseudonym), a salesperson at the station who was dismissed after working there for two months. Annoyed, he filed a complaint with the local labor arbitration department, "There will be a hearing on September 3rd, and now I can only stay unemployed at home waiting for the result." He indicated that because he had signed a strict confidentiality agreement with Gaopeng, he feared legal responsibility, "So now I cannot find work in the group-buying industry."
"Today, Ningbo station began large-scale layoffs, two-thirds will be cut," Xingyuan told the reporter on the 19th. Meanwhile, an employee from Gaopeng's Shanghai station wrote on their QQ signature: "Humans can no longer stop Gaopeng from laying off people."
