In order to help orphans, the late Wang Hanlu, who was disabled, learned how to sew. Photo by Zhou Xucai. On February 12th, a car accident ended the life of Wang Hanlu, a 49-year-old disabled person from Dafeng City, and his lifelong journey of doing good deeds. With a disabled right leg and never married, he successively helped or adopted three local orphans. He supported himself with the meager income from knitting sweaters and sewing, and even limped his way to the disaster area in Sichuan as a volunteer. Last year, the orphan he adopted from Shaanxi got married, but he still lived in a small house of only 10 square meters. On the 25th, many people who had never met him voluntarily went to the funeral home to bid farewell to "grassroots good person" Wang Hanlu...
Wang Hanlu was from Longfu Village, Dazhong Town, Dafeng City. Due to polio, he became disabled at the age of three, with his right leg permanently losing normal function. Standing at only 1.54 meters tall, he was unable to stand most of the time. His physical disability made his life extraordinarily hard. Despite being physically disabled and living in difficulty, it did not stop Wang Hanlu's journey of doing good deeds. Nineteen years ago, he sponsored three orphans far away in Xinjiang and Shaanxi. In 1994, he brought one of the orphans, Liu Cunbao, back from Shaanxi to Dafeng to raise. With the help of relevant departments, Little Bao was able to enter school smoothly. Society gave much support to Wang Hanlu and Little Bao, not only waiving all tuition fees but also people from all over the country paying attention to this special father-son pair, often sending them remittances and daily necessities and learning supplies. To raise Liu Cunbao into adulthood, he gave up the plan to marry and have children, raising Liu Cunbao as his own son but never letting him change his surname to "Wang".
In June 2006, Wang Hanlu applied to the Nanjing Red Cross to voluntarily donate hematopoietic stem cells and signed an agreement to forcibly donate his body after death; After the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Wang Hanlu went alone to the disaster area and joined the ranks of volunteers. Living a poor but contented life, Wang Hanlu never asked for help from the government, always insisting on making a living on his own. Just before he died in a car accident, he was preparing to work at a toy factory in Dafeng. For more than ten years, he and his son Liu Cunbao have been living in a small house of only more than 10 square meters in the urban area of Dafeng.
Tragically, on February 12th this year, while riding an electric bike home, Wang Hanlu was hit by a reversing truck on a cement road and died on the spot at the young age of 49. At the memorial service, Liu Cunbao expressed that after the compensation for his father's car accident is settled, he will take part of the compensation money to set up the "Wang Hanlu Love Foundation". "Without dad, I might have starved to death. Dad was a great man, now I want to continue passing on dad's love and help more people..." Correspondent Wang Jitao, Zhou Xucai. Reporter Guo Xiaoquan.
