Perhaps you have been holding out on purchasing a tablet until Windows 8 arrives. Perhaps you are very keen on having Windows based on ARM - what with the greatly improved battery life it might offer over Intel or AMD tablets. If both of these things are true, you're in for a treat: Windows 8 will include Office 15 applications, based on ARM. (WOA) In Steven Sinofsky's recent, 8000 plus word blog, detailing Windows based on ARM, he revealed some interesting insights. One, he said, is that the Windows desktop remains an important part of WOA, and ARM users will still be able to access the desktop and desktop applications. Of course, the applications will be ported to the ARM architecture, but it is good to get the extra confirmation that Metro style applications for WOA aren't limited to just that. It is also worth knowing that WOA will include core Office 15 applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Sinofsky mentioned that the goal is for WOA to be a "no compromise product," and Microsoft knows that Windows users will want to access industry-leading productivity applications, even on non-x86 desktops and laptops. That's a pretty solid freebie for four apps. Confused? You have your reasons. Microsoft isn't letting go of a truckload of office cash, so it is a bit strange to hear that they bundled it with WOA. Then again, this is the same company that has already given consumers ad-supported (but still mostly free) Office Starter and free use of Office Web Apps. Why not throw in some ARM apps too? But perhaps Sinofsky meant that Office 15 will be included in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview as well, giving users a chance to test them both out at the same time. This could be the case since, aside from Windows based on ARM, there won't be any downloadable or purchasable version for consumers - you'll only be able to buy hardware with WOA pre-installed. So what's Microsoft playing at here? Are they gifting the apps, BOPP film, and hoping to introduce a Dropbox-like plan involving SkyDrive storage subscriptions to accompany it? It has been widely publicized that Windows 8 will feature heavy SkyDrive integration, so Microsoft could indeed be looking for ways to create a recurring revenue stream from Office users - rather than selling people an upgrade every few years.
