Our press (Correspondent Qi Yang, Reporter Li Jie) - Originally a top student in the Investigation Department of a university, Zhang Xiaoming (a pseudonym) became addicted to gambling machines and could not extricate himself. He then utilized his learned investigation skills to scout locations for thefts. In just one month, he committed over 20 offenses with an involved amount of more than 30,000 yuan, and all these ill-gotten gains were fed into "slot machines" by Zhang Xiaoming. Just as he was preparing to commit another offense, he was caught red-handed by the police. On September 29th, it was reported that the Anning District Court sentenced Zhang Xiaoming to 3 years and 6 months in prison for theft, and fined him 5,000 yuan. After the verdict was announced, Zhang Xiaoming expressed acceptance of the judgment in court.
Zhang Xiaoming, who is less than 20 years old, is a freshman at a university in Lanzhou's Investigation Department. His parents are farmers from Wushan, Tianshui. One day, by chance, Zhang Xiaoming followed a friend to an arcade near the campus, where a slot machine with gambling nature made Zhang Xiaoming addicted. Soon, he had spent all the living expenses and tuition fees that his parents had saved up on the slot machines. At this point, Zhang Xiaoming, who had lost his sight due to gambling, began to think of stealing. He found that every time he entered the school office building, he only needed to say that he had something to do with a teacher, and no registration was required. In Zhang Xiaoming's eyes, these teachers who taught him every day were all well-off, and they had little guard against students, thus making them the easiest targets.
On one day in November 2010, the Investigation Department student Zhang Xiaoming applied what he had learned, and started stealing the property of teachers in the office building, successively stealing more than 20,000 yuan in cash, a laptop computer, and two mobile phones. Just as Zhang Xiaoming was preparing to steal again, he was caught red-handed by the police.
After being arrested, Zhang Xiaoming confessed that between November and December 2010, he not only frequently stole from his alma mater but also extended his black hand to other universities. All his theft targets were in-service teachers of various universities, including those who taught him regularly. It was reported that Zhang Xiaoming invested all the stolen money into slot machines. During the trial, Zhang Xiaoming admitted to the charges without reservation. Based on Zhang Xiaoming's attitude towards confession, the Anning District Court legally made the aforementioned ruling.
