Three college students refused to accept 1,000 yuan gratuity

City Evening News report - At 9 a.m. on November 19th, three students from the class of 2011 at the Changchun AVIC Industry Technical School found a wallet with more than 4,000 yuan in cash outside a bank on Qingnian Road in Changchun City. Despite the cold weather, the three students waited for hours in the wind until they finally met the owner.

Yesterday, when Mr. Fan, the owner of the wallet, came to the school to express his gratitude, the school learned about the students' good deeds of returning the lost property.

The three college students picked up 4,000 yuan in cash and waited for the owner in the cold wind.

At 9 a.m. on November 19th, three students from the class of 2011 at the Changchun AVIC Industry Technical School - Liu Yongjing, Gao Chang, and Jiang Bing - went together to the Bank of Communications Qingnian Road branch to handle bank card matters. When they arrived at the bank entrance, they saw a brown wallet on the ground, which was bulging. Student Liu Yongjing picked up the wallet and opened it, finding a lot of cash and bank cards inside. The three students looked at each other and said in unison that with so much money, the owner must be very anxious. However, there was no contact information for the owner inside the wallet. After discussing, they decided to wait for the owner at the same location. The weather was extremely cold and windy, and after waiting for over an hour, the students were already frozen through. It was almost noon, but the owner had not yet appeared. Since the students didn't have much money and the funds they carried were insufficient for lunch outside, they returned to school to eat. After lunch, undeterred by the cold, the students walked for more than half an hour and returned to the Bank of Communications entrance to continue waiting for the owner.

The owner offered a thousand yuan gratuity which was refused, praising the children's noble character.

In the afternoon, as it became colder, after waiting for half an hour, they finally met a man searching for his wallet. After confirming, the wallet indeed belonged to Mr. Fan. The students told Mr. Fan that due to the fear of losing the wallet on the way, they had placed it safely in their dormitory under the supervision of other classmates. Now that the owner had been found, they could go back to the school to retrieve the wallet.

Mr. Fan said that although there was only more than 4,000 yuan in cash in the wallet, it was more important that there were many receipts and bank cards inside. If lost, replacing them would be very troublesome, and some couldn't be replaced at all, resulting in incalculable losses. Being able to recover the lost wallet made Mr. Fan extremely happy. He remarked: "In such cold weather, the students waited for hours for the owner and returned the money, which is truly commendable." This noble quality of returning lost property deeply moved him. Mr. Fan immediately took out 1,000 yuan to thank the three students, but they refused it. The students said, "Who says 'post-90s' lack responsibility? Returning lost property is fundamental to our integrity. No matter how cold it was, we would continue waiting. It's what we should do."

During the interview, Mr. Fan said that besides thanking these three good children who returned the lost property, he also wanted to thank the Changchun AVIC Industry Technical School for cultivating these students with noble character, carrying forward the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation. He hopes that more people will learn from them and work together to contribute to building a safe and harmonious Changchun.
