Our reporter Qian Weihua - After Li drove a car and hit a pedestrian to death, he fled. The traffic police visited communities near the accident location one by one. After screening more than 6000 old Passat sedans, they identified the perpetrator as Li. It was reported yesterday that Li was arrested while dining in a restaurant and has now been criminally detained.
At 9:30 PM on January 13th, at the gate of Haitexi Community on Xijing Road in Shijingshan District, a small car traveling from west to east hit a pedestrian and then fled the scene. The victim, Zhang, was a 23-year-old migrant worker from Gansu who died on the spot due to the accident.
After receiving reports from passersby, officers from the Accident Department of the Shijingshan Traffic Brigade quickly arrived at the scene. Through scattered debris at the scene, surveillance footage around the incident site, and interviews with eyewitnesses, they determined that the culprit vehicle was an old silver-gray Passat sedan. However, the vehicle involved did not have license plates installed either before or after the incident, which increased the difficulty of solving the case.
The Shijingshan Traffic Brigade immediately divided into several teams to conduct investigations overnight. One team of traffic police reviewed the records of 6,678 old silver-gray Passat cars across the city to find suspicious vehicles; another team visited all 14 nearby communities, interviewing nearly 500 people; yet another team expanded the scope and retrieved all related surveillance videos from intersections and roads in Shijingshan District.
With the help of meticulous investigation by the police officers and high-tech equipment from the traffic management department, after three days and nights of investigation, the investigating officers identified the culprit vehicle as a Beijing-licensed sedan driven by Li, a 26-year-old Beijinger.
At 8 PM on January 17th, upon receiving a tip-off, the traffic police went to a restaurant in Yangzhuang, Shijingshan. As Li looked up and saw the traffic police, he immediately tried to flee but was caught on the spot.
Li confessed that on the night of the incident, he relied on the fact that his car did not have license plates, believing that the traffic police would never find him, so he fled the scene out of侥幸 (侥幸 means侥幸ment). The next morning, the police located the offending car in Mentougou District based on the information provided by Li.
It is understood that Li has already been criminally detained for causing a traffic accident.
