Suggestions from Mr. and Mrs. Wang:

It is recommended to visit Zhangjiajie first, then Phoenix Ancient City. The reason is that climbing Zhangjiajie is very strenuous, covering four major scenic areas spanning 264 square kilometers, generally requiring three days of mostly walking. Of course, there are elevators, cable cars, and sightseeing trains available, but for independent travelers, it is economical, offers freedom, and allows seeing more sights. There is no need to rush. After climbing the mountains, soaking your sore legs in the Tuo River in Phoenix Ancient City provides a good rest. Then return home, making the trip more relaxed.

Things to Note for Zhangjiajie Self-Driving and Independent Travelers:

1. Temperature difference between the scenic area and city center is about 5 degrees Celsius. Even in summer, a light blanket is necessary in the scenic area.

2. Less luggage is better, lighter is better. Bring an umbrella or rainproof clothing (or purchase disposable raincoats locally for 5-8 yuan/piece). Mountain weather changes unpredictably. In summer, bring mosquito repellent. Carry some disinfectant wipes, band-aids, anti-inflammatory tablets, diarrhea tablets (for acclimatization issues), etc. Wear slip-resistant athletic shoes. Bring extra film and batteries, as they are more expensive within the scenic area.

3. Bring some snacks (mountain climbing consumes energy) and bottled water (reduce travel expenses). Keep money distributed safely. If possible, bring a nationwide bank card and ID.

4. It’s best to travel with a few companions, sharing costs and looking out for each other.

5. After exiting the train station, do not easily engage with strangers. Contact your tour guide beforehand (they will pick you up). Bus No. 6 goes to the bus station. Keep your belongings secure to prevent theft. Tourist cities are crowded and mixed, so be cautious!

6. Students, seniors (aged 70 or above), disabled individuals, soldiers, and provincial press card holders should remember to bring their IDs to receive corresponding discounted or free entrance tickets (free ticket holders pay 68 yuan for eco-friendly bus fees, including 3 yuan insurance).

7. Zhangjiajie is famous for its mountains, so most of the time is spent hiking. Choose flat-soled shoes.

8. Beware of fake traffic police. Only real traffic police use marked vehicles. Ignore those sitting in regular cars pretending to arrange accommodations or tours for you!

9. Starting June 2, 2010, visitors exceeding the two-day ticket validity period within the scenic area must purchase a 50 yuan cycle ticket plus 3 yuan insurance.
