Universities Encounter a New Problem: Graduate Students of Prestigious Universities Choose to Abandon Their Studies

Report by reporter Jianhua Zhu, correspondents Bo Chen and Ming Ge - Universities are facing a new problem: graduate students from prestigious universities in big cities are also choosing to abandon their studies.

Yesterday, a statistic released by Zhongnan University of Economics and Law showed that among the university's newly enrolled graduate students this year, 38 freshmen chose to abandon their studies, including one doctoral student. A relevant official from the university introduced that most freshmen who abandoned their studies did so because they found ideal jobs.

This year, the university also had 36 graduate students who applied to postpone their enrollment until next year.

The situation faced by Zhongnan University of Economics and Law is not an isolated case. China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) enrolled more than 1700 new graduate students this year. One month after the start of school, 29 people did not go through with enrollment procedures, including four doctoral students. A teacher from the university's School of Political Science and Law said that among the three unreported cases in the college, two have already been employed, and another person is preparing for the civil service exam.

Among the freshmen who abandoned their studies at prestigious universities, there are not only graduate students but also undergraduate students. Among the freshmen admitted by Wuhan University this year, 63 chose to give up the opportunity to attend university. Among them, 14 chose to study abroad, some chose to repeat a year, and the rest of the situations are unclear.

In addition, every year, a certain number of students from many universities choose to drop out. According to a statistic published in the Hubei Education Yearbook, the total number of undergraduates, junior college students, and graduate students who dropped out midway in one year reached 2800.

Some education experts stated that the phenomenon of graduate students abandoning their studies is also related to the national promotion of increasing the proportion of professional degree admissions, "the tuition fee for professional degrees is not low, and employment prospects may not be good in the future."
