"Oliver Twist," a realistic novel by British writer Charles Dickens published in 1838. Set against the backdrop of foggy London, it tells the tragic story and experiences of an orphan. The protagonist, Oliver, grows up in an orphanage, endures an apprenticeship, escapes through hardships, mistakenly falls into a den of thieves, and is then forced to associate with cruel and vicious criminals, experiencing countless hardships. Eventually, with the help of kind-hearted people, he discovers his true origins and finds happiness. Like Dickens' other novels, this book exposes many social issues of the time, such as workhouses, child labor, and gangs recruiting teenagers for criminal activities. The book has been adapted multiple times into films, television series, and stage plays. Renowned world director Roman Polanski also adapted this book into a movie in 2005.
