Christina and her husband Sandy, Sohu Space
According to British media reports on the 17th, seven years ago Christina suffered from a sudden brain hemorrhage but was misdiagnosed by doctors as having a viral infection. This delay in treatment led to permanent brain damage, turning her into a woman with amnesia whose memory can only last for 10 minutes. After a long legal battle for compensation, on the 15th, the court finally made a ruling and awarded Christina a substantial compensation of 4.46 million pounds.
Misdiagnosis Leading to Permanent Brain Damage
The 41-year-old Christina is from Durham, UK. In 2002, Christina suddenly collapsed. Her husband Sandy immediately sent her to the hospital for treatment. The doctors diagnosed her as having just a viral infection.
Two weeks later, Christina experienced an even more severe brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital again. This time, the doctors finally discovered the real cause and immediately performed surgery to remove half a liter of blood from her brain, barely saving her life. The doctors ultimately diagnosed Christina with the most severe "Grade 5 subarachnoid hemorrhage," and due to the misdiagnosis that delayed treatment, the accumulated blood in her skull had been pressing on her brain tissue for a long time, causing Christina's brain to sustain permanent damage.
Memory Lasting Only 10 Minutes
From then on, Christina became a woman with amnesia like the protagonist in the Hollywood movie "50 First Dates," with her memory lasting only 10 minutes. Sandy said that since the medical accident, Christina's brain could no longer store any new information; she doesn't remember anything that happened 10 minutes ago, and her memory always remains within those "10 minutes."
Sandy mentioned that he and Christina met in 1990 and lived together for over a decade. However, after Christina lost her memory, she forgot everything. To help retrieve some of Christina's memories, Sandy took her on a trip to Paris where they first fell in love. Sandy said: "At first, I didn't realize that she would lose her memory forever. I took her to Paris for the weekend, thinking she might recall some unforgettable moments. We spent 12 hours in Paris, but 12 minutes after we drove away from Paris, she had already forgotten about it and told me, 'If we could visit Paris while we're in France, that would be great!'"
Hearing the News of Her Father's Death Multiple Times
What saddened Sandy the most was that after Christina's father passed away, he had to repeatedly tell her this tragic news, and every time Christina would cry her heart out as if hearing it for the first time because she would forget the fact of her father's death after 10 minutes.
Sandy said: "I have to make all decisions for her and consider all the details of daily life that normal people take for granted. For example, if I don't remind her, she will keep brushing her teeth or eating endlessly because she doesn't remember that she has just done these things."
According to Sandy, since his wife Christina lost her memory, she has had to rely on others for full-time care and has lost her ability to work. Their dream of having children has also been shattered. Enraged, Sandy filed a lawsuit against the doctor who misdiagnosed her and the relevant hospital department.
On the 15th, the court made its ruling and awarded the "amnesiac woman" Christina 4.46 million pounds. Sandy stated: "This money can provide the care and support my wife needs for the rest of her life, but it cannot alleviate my pain because money cannot restore her life or memories."
