"The airside" refers to the runway for aircraft takeoff and landing, the apron for aircraft parking, as well as the taxiway system connecting the runway and the apron. They, with concrete actions, steadfastly uphold the "grand cause of heaven and earth," building the most solid safety barrier for Baiyun Airport without any regrets.
"The airside" refers to the runway for aircraft takeoff and landing, the apron for aircraft parking, as well as the taxiway system connecting the runway and the apron. Baiyun Airside is responsible for managing the operational order and on-site management, command, and coordination of the airside area at Baiyun Airport. In more detail, this department's responsibilities also include equipment and facility management, road traffic safety and violation certificate management, non-stop aviation construction supervision, important passenger flight support, emergency event handling, and assisting in organizing and commanding emergency rescue scenes.
Not long ago, this all-male group was honored with the National Civil Aviation May Day Labor Award collective title. Prior to that, they had consecutively received the "Top Ten Airport Collectives" honorary title from Guangdong Province Airport Management Group for three years.
Strengthening rectification planning: ensuring airside operational order
"If we consider the airside area as a living organism, the traffic operation order would be akin to the circulatory system of this organism. Only by ensuring smooth blood circulation can the vitality of the organism be maintained; while various facilities and equipment are like the different parts of the life body, ensuring the coordinated operation of each part promotes normal functioning of the life body." Party Secretary Li Meng of Baiyun Airside vividly analogized the role of the airside.
Baiyun Airside prioritizes strictness, meticulously addressing various vehicle violations within the airside area, nipping problems in the bud. There are at least six rounds of inspections conducted daily, combining routine governance with special rectifications, integrating punishment and education. They implement a weekly one-day specialized traffic rectification day and a "Traffic Safety Education" learning day, reviewing various rules and regulations, watching traffic violation audio-visual materials, and analyzing typical cases. These measures have yielded significant results. At the beginning of this year, Baiyun Airside received a complaint letter from an airline criticizing ground vehicles for frequently using high beams at night, posing safety hazards to taxiing aircraft. The airside management department then launched a month-long special rectification campaign. Every evening, the on-site commander would set up a checkpoint on the apron, stopping every vehicle driving with high beams on and patiently explaining the dangers high beams pose to taxiing aircraft. Commander Xiao Zhang recalled that it was February, with cold winds blowing fiercely on the apron. Despite wearing thick cotton coats, the cold wind still seeped through their clothes, sometimes making it difficult to speak due to strong gusts.
Integrating service into management: pioneering a new management model
As Baiyun Airport continues to develop, outdated management models are gradually unable to meet the increasing needs of resident units. Combining Baiyun Airport's goal of creating a "world top ten service airport," the airside management department is dedicated to pioneering a new management model. In management, they establish a service-oriented mindset, integrating service awareness into management behavior, achieving the purpose of rectifying operational order, standardizing resident units, and improving operational efficiency through more humanized "service-style management."
Additionally, Baiyun Airside actively shifts its perspective, adopting a "go out, invite in" approach by establishing a regular neighboring unit visitation system. Through visits, they inform various operational support units about cooperation and coordination difficulties and violations, soliciting opinions and suggestions regarding apron operation management, strengthening coordination and cooperation among work processes. Last year, during a patrol, the on-site commander discovered a significant safety hazard in a certain unit's on-site support process. After correcting the situation on the spot, Manager Sun Qiling personally led a team to visit the unit, providing corresponding suggestions and assisting them in implementing safe and effective rectifications. Afterwards, the leadership of the unit expressed gratitude by presenting a banner inscribed with "Quality Service."
This new service-style management model has been recognized by other support units, who believe that this communication method facilitates moving safety checkpoints forward and information sharing. They have all expressed willingness to strengthen coordination and cooperation, jointly creating a good apron safety operation environment.
Tempering steel-like willpower: enhancing team combat effectiveness
The all-male members of Baiyun Airside possess a high sensitivity and sense of responsibility towards safety. Their quick responses have resolved dangers in the aircraft activity area time and again, tempering their hardworking male character and iron bones.
Not long ago, on a stormy morning with thunder and lightning, the airside department received information that the pavement of the rapid exit taxiway on the east runway was damaged and bulging due to a lightning strike. Without hesitation, the on-duty team grabbed their raincoats and boots and rushed to the accident site. Upon arriving at the runway scene, a sudden downpour forced them back into the car after just stepping out. Once the rain eased, they approached the damaged pavement. Investigations revealed two damages over a meter long caused by the lightning strike, rendering the pavement unusable. After some time, the rain stopped, but the thunder continued. Undeterred by the danger, they contacted relevant units to immediately repair the damage, reported the situation to the relevant departments, and persisted in supervising and coordinating on-site. They remained in the storm for several hours until the pavement was repaired before leaving.
At the moment others joyfully reunite with their families, they diligently guard for normal operations; when others seek shelter indoors during storms or extreme heat, they tirelessly maintain order regardless of weather conditions. They, with concrete actions, steadfastly uphold the "grand cause of heaven and earth," unwaveringly constructing the strongest safety barrier for Baiyun Airport.
