The village is abundant in big cherries. In order to master the planting technology as soon as possible, she studied in the villagers' orchards every day and took a thick notebook of planting technology notes, becoming a famous big cherry planting expert in the whole village.

Now, her career unfinished, she has fallen ill. Leukemia is slowly devouring her youth. Lying in the hospital bed, Zhang Guangxiu looks pale and haggard, only her eyes are clean and crystalline, revealing an infinite hope for life. "My braids used to be so beautiful," she said while flipping through her college photo album. In the photos, she stands among a cluster of flowers, smiling radiantly, with a slim face.

Her diary is filled with self-encouragement: "Disease cannot interrupt my work", "Find ways to do it even if there are no conditions"... When the pain becomes unbearable, she sings, a self-composed song "Tomorrow Will Be Better", which she has sung countless times.

Zhang Guangxiu (the first on the left) exchanges with villagers.

From the surface, Zhang Guangxiu is an ordinary girl, but as a university student village official, she has an extraordinary spirit of hard work and dedication.

Zhang Guangxiu interprets her love for work in this way: "Every small thing, the hardships involved are like novels; as long as I can bring a little benefit to the villagers, I am willing to endure any difficulties."

The disease came suddenly, yet seemed to have been forewarned. Since September 2010, the word "pain" has frequently appeared in Zhang Guangxiu's diary: "can't straighten up due to pain", "heart-wrenching pain", "sleepless nights due to pain"...

At the end of August 2010, the town required that the health records of the villagers in Lushang Village be organized within four days. There were 760 people in the village, one form per person, a huge workload. This task fell on Zhang Guangxiu. She worked overtime every night, suffering from severe neck pain, sometimes having to work with her head tilted. Her diary recorded how she overcame the pain: "This kind of pain is something I've never experienced before. No strength, just anxious, what to do?" Every day, she had to take a large amount of antibiotics. She joked with herself: "I've become a medicine jar. 36 degrees, cold sweat, haha, too many problems."

Many people who read her diary left messages: "In this snowy morning, you moved me. I hope you can live strongly and smile." "Many people misunderstand that 'post-80s' generation don't understand responsibility and indulge in pleasure. Your persistence in the village official career tells people that the 'post-80s' generation can also shoulder the heavy responsibilities given by the era!"

Zhang Guangxiu is optimistic about her treatment. Even on the hospital bed, she stretched out her plump arms and pointed at her head saying: "Yesterday, I talked to the secretary on the phone, the village will soon start the demolition work, I need to get well quickly and go to the construction site wearing a safety helmet!"

Opening her notebook, it is full of such notes: "There is a small road in the village that is very difficult to walk, we need to find a way to repair it", "The cultural life of the villagers is too scarce, we need to set up a rural book house, so that everyone can read books during their free time and recharge themselves"... Yes, there are still many things waiting for her to do.

Reading her diary, almost every day there are records of "running errands for the villagers". From medical insurance to water and electricity fees, as long as the villagers have needs, no matter how small the matter, she would walk dozens of miles to handle it.

"Disease cannot interrupt my work"

Zhang Guangxiu's condition has touched countless hearts. The university student village officials of Fushan District, Yantai, took action, donating nearly 50,000 yuan in one day. The 215 university student village officials of Weifang Changyi City, upon hearing about her condition, actively donated 24,810 yuan. Once, several sanitation workers from Linyi City came to the ward, dropped off the money, and left.

Finally, it was completed. She seemed to have forgotten the previous pain: "Life gave me a big bitter fruit, but I also harvested sweet honey. Maybe, this is life."

"Just the day before being hospitalized, Guangxiu was still talking to me about the work to be done tomorrow, not going home until 9 pm after working overtime," Wang Zilong choked up.

Zhang Guangxiu was writing on a small table. After writing a few words, she frowned, her neck hurt more. Several trips to the village clinic, the doctor told her it was a stiff neck, she needed to rest. "But, there is still a lot of work waiting."

"She is a very strong girl, always telling me, give me more work," Wang Zilong said, "The affairs of the village are complicated and numerous, I know the difficulties. Guangxiu is a girl, not very old, but I feel that she is putting all her blood and sweat into this job."

In 2010, Lushang Village was officially included in Yantai City's urban development plan. To ensure the smooth progress of the demolition, she was responsible for collecting the land certificates and property certificates of the villagers for statistics. Some villagers thought there were errors in their land certificates, Zhang Guangxiu coordinated repeatedly, and no villager felt they had been shortchanged.

The last diary entry was like this: "My neck started to hurt again. Yesterday's documents need to be submitted, ride the bike again. Back to the office, busy with my PPT presentation, struggled for an afternoon, finished." It continued until "prepare materials tonight...", probably the ballpoint pen ran out of ink, she tried to scratch a few more times, then stopped.

Not far from Lushang Village is the Yantai Economic and Technological Development Zone, with towering buildings. But here, it is a row of low bungalows. This disparity pierced the heart of this young village official. It was from that moment that Zhang Guangxiu hid a dream in her heart: "I dream that one day, all the villagers can move out of the bungalows and live in beautiful small buildings, taking buses to work."

Dr. Zhang Haiyan, the attending physician, told reporters that Zhang Guangxiu's condition cannot be cured solely by chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation is necessary. However, even if a relative's bone marrow is transplanted, the cost of surgery will be close to 300,000 yuan. For Zhang Guangxiu's parents, this is an astronomical number.

Recently, a "Sick Diary" is widely spreading on the "University Student Village Official Forum". The recorder is named Zhang Guangxiu, the assistant to the village director and the Youth League branch secretary of Lushang Village, Fuxin Street, Fushan District, Yantai City, Shandong Province. The diary records her psychological journey after being diagnosed with leukemia.
