China's first petascale supercomputer, at the core of China's technological advancement, has been years in the making. Learned from the Tianjin Science and Technology Commission, China’s first petaflop supercomputer, "Milky Way One," is expected to be installed by the second half of this year. It was designed and manufactured using China’s independently developed central processing unit (CPU) chip, known as "booming in the." This installation will greatly enhance the speed and efficiency of operations.
According to reports, "Milky Way One," during its development, utilized imported CPUs for some components, but other core parts such as interconnect chips, operating systems, were independently developed in China. Today, the challenge of developing an "ultra high-performance CPU" has also been resolved. The "soar" chip, specifically customized by the National Defense University for the "Milky Way" series of computers, has reached the level of the world’s main server CPUs.
The CPU is the computer’s core component, often referred to as the "heart of a computer." With the installation of the "soar" chip, "Milky Way" is expected to reach a peak computing speed of 1,206,000,000,000,000 calculations per second, improving its actual operational speed to over one million billion calculations per second. As the key chip is completely "homemade," it ensures greater information security for "Milky Way."
"Milky Way One," launched for development by the National Defense University in October 2009, already has its smaller system operational within the national supercomputing center in Tianjin. It serves industries in the Tianjin Bohai Sea region, including biopharmaceuticals, new energy materials, aerospace equipment, and services for new industrial research and development. By the end of this year, after "Milky Way One" is fully deployed, Tianjin will become one of the first regions with petaflops computing power, forming an information industry cluster with an annual output value exceeding 10 billion yuan.
