At a press conference held this morning in Brussels, Belgium, the Daimler Group and Renault-Nissan Alliance officially announced that the three automakers will collaborate on developing future new products. The companies will exchange shares in each other's businesses. Rumors of this deal have been circulating for several months. Daimler has been seeking a partner to share the costs of small car development.

According to the new agreement, Daimler will hold a 3.1% stake in both Renault and Nissan partners, while the Renault-Nissan Alliance will also hold an identical stake in the Daimler Group. Both parties will establish a comprehensive platform that will serve as the foundation for the Renault Twingo and smart cars. Among them, the next generation of smart cars will have a four-seat version. These new models will be launched in 2013, with the current Smart factory in France continuing to produce the two-seat version. The new four-seat version, along with the previous two-seat version, will be produced at Renault's plant in Slovenia. All three models will come in gasoline, diesel, and electric versions.

These automakers will also share powertrain systems for other models. Renault-Nissan will provide natural gas or diesel engines for Daimler's compact cars, including possibly the next generation of A, B, and even C-Class Mercedes-Benz models. Similarly, Daimler will provide engines for Nissan’s Infiniti brand. Both parties will also collaborate on the development of light commercial vehicles, with Renault offering a new entry-level commercial vehicle sold under the Mercedes brand.
