Yu Cheng'an, chairman of Nanjing Lukou International Airport, recently expressed in Nanjing that he plans to develop the airport under his jurisdiction into a large hub airport in China and a center for air freight and express delivery. The second phase project of Nanjing Lukou International Airport with a total investment of 9.898 billion yuan RMB is about to start construction.
Chen Bangchang, director of the Second Phase Project Office of Nanjing Lukou International Airport, said that the new runway to be started in the second phase project is located 2,000 meters south of the existing runway, measuring 3,600 meters long and 60 meters wide. Once the second phase project is completed, it will accommodate more large aircraft. The second terminal building is located on the south side of the existing terminal building, covering an area of 200,000 square meters. After completion, it will be the largest single building in Jiangsu Province, accompanied by corresponding aprons, integrated ground transportation systems, parking facilities.
He continued, stating that the existing terminal building will also be renovated to meet the needs of 30 million passengers together with the newly built second terminal building; corresponding freight facilities, municipal supporting facilities, office and living facilities, production auxiliary facilities, and overnight accommodations for passengers will be constructed. The project involves the requisition of about 6,000 mu of land, with a total investment of 9.898 billion yuan RMB, among which, the airport engineering costs 9.631 billion yuan RMB.
Xu Yong, vice general manager of the airport, stated that Nanjing Lukou International Airport originally had routes to 76 cities domestically and internationally. In November this year, the airport respectively collaborated with Air China and China Eastern Airlines using "one ticket to the destination, baggage direct check-in" and "through check-in" methods to open return routes from Nanjing—Beijing—New York and Nanjing—Pudong—Los Angeles/Vancouver, filling the gap of no North American international routes in Nanjing.
