Released in 2004 and modeled after the black mamba snake, this was the first Jordan shoe release after his third and final retirement, which came after the 2002-2003 NBA season. Two original colorways were released: white/flint grey and black/red. Three Jordan Retro 19 regional colorways and three special edition colorways were also released. They included the East, West, and Midwest editions for regular releases, and the West, East, and Olympic editions for the SE (special edition). The Air Jordan 19 XIX utilized innovative materials. The upper section of the shoe was developed in collaboration with Material ConneXion Inc., using a sleeving material typically employed in architectural applications to protect PVC pipes from bursting. In theory, this allowed for a lace-less shoe because the sleeving does not stretch; however, the Jordan 19 model did include a set of laces behind the sleeve to better secure the shoe.
