a one-way ticket

Last night, we held a farewell dinner for a colleague. Because of the girl's amiability, more than 20 people attended, including journalists and photographers. If it weren't for seeing her off, we wouldn't know when everyone could sit together again. One photographer who couldn't come asked a colleague to give her a bus model as a gift. When this girl first came to the company as an intern and didn't speak Cantonese well, she told the boy who was the first to partner with her on an external interview: "I like Hong Kong buses." Everyone was reluctant to see her go. A female colleague started crying and said: "I've never met someone who shares my birthday, and now she is leaving." She also cried, trying hard to hold back her tears until finally breaking down in loud sobs. She kept repeating one sentence: "I don't want to leave." Seeing her cry her eyes out, those male photographers were at a loss for what to do. Such sadness exists because everyone knows that most of us will never see this lovely little girl again, as she has bought a one-way ticket to leave Hong Kong and return to Beijing. This choice for the girl is truly the hardest decision of her life. On one side, there is her beloved job as a TV reporter, and her career is developing well. There is also her favorite living environment and the friends she has made during her four years in Hong Kong. More realistically, if she stays for three more years, she can become a permanent resident of Hong Kong and obtain a regional passport. At the other end of the ticket, Beijing, there is her boyfriend whom she has been dating since middle school, and her sick mother. Although she studied in Beijing for four years, she has never worked there before. Beijing is a strange place where she needs to start anew. She thought about it for a long time and asked for my opinion. I just asked her what mattered most to her. In the end, she chose family and love. I know she is very scared now, not because she hasn't found a job yet - she is very confident that she can support herself, even if the job isn't something she likes. What she fears is whether she can face living with her boyfriend after being apart for so many years, having gotten used to long-distance communication and short-term interactions. Her concerns are not unfounded. Distance creates beauty; many couples break up due to increased understanding. But without trying, no one knows the outcome. In my eyes, she is a brave girl. I know that many choices are often passive, like myself, moving from Hong Kong to Beijing and then back to Hong Kong due to work arrangements, changes I had to accept. But she is different. She actively makes choices for her own life and begins a transformation. This requires courage, confidence, and more importantly, wisdom in life. I still remember the English song I heard as a child, "One Way Ticket," which tells the story of leaving hometown to pursue a new life. However, today's life is not as resolute as that time. After arriving at the other end of the one-way ticket, if you find it's not a place you can adapt to, there are always other options. Choices have no right or wrong, only gains and losses. Life cannot be perfect, but it is precisely these gains and losses that allow us to understand what we truly need. Watching the little girl cry sadly, I want to say, cry your heart out, this is also a kind of happiness and fate. But we are not the most important people in your life. At the other end of that one-way ticket, although there is uncertainty, once you get there, there will certainly be people and things that you will be equally reluctant to part with.
