A beggar lay on the ground motionless. After spotting him, a teenage girl passing by knelt down and administered CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until he regained consciousness. A touching scene unfolded yesterday morning in front of Guiyou Building in Tongzhou District. Eyewitnesses said that the beggar might have fainted from hunger and left on his own after being revived.
Although they witnessed it firsthand, the eyewitnesses still found it hard to believe that a fashionably dressed young woman performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to save the collapsed beggar.
Recalling the incident at noon yesterday, Mr. Zhou, a driver waiting for passengers near the entrance of Guiyou Building, said that at around 10:30 AM, a beggar wearing a military overcoat was walking unsteadily when he suddenly fell under a flagpole.
"His hand was clutching his chest, swaying back and forth," Mr. Zhou said. The beggar might have fainted due to hunger and did not get up afterward. At the time, several other drivers were standing nearby, hesitating momentarily, "unsure whether it was real or not, so no one immediately approached." At this moment, two women passing by also noticed the beggar, muttering about how no one was helping, then walked forward, with one bending down to begin administering CPR and performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
The woman performed artificial respiration twice while kneeling.
When the woman was rescuing the man, more than ten passersby gathered to watch. By coincidence, Mr. Wang, who happened to be passing by, recorded a 43-second video using his mobile phone. Mr. Wang said that the woman's actions were very natural; three or four people were taking photos with their phones, but no one had used a professional camera, which seemed to indicate that it wasn't a publicity stunt or staged performance.
In the video, reporters observed that at the entrance of Guiyou Building, a young man was lying motionless with his legs spread apart and his right hand resting on his chest. His face was calm, wearing a white woolen hat stained with dirt, an old military overcoat, trousers with red stains, and slippers on his feet.
The rescuer was a woman of about 20 years old. In the footage, she knelt on both knees, first checking the man, then stacking her hands and pressing repeatedly on his chest. After pausing briefly, the woman leaned close to his face to listen to his breathing and continued the chest compression action of CPR. After a few seconds, the compressions stopped, and the woman supported the man's face, blowing air into his mouth through mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Then, she repeated the chest compression and artificial respiration actions.
This woman had a delicate appearance, long black hair, wore a black fur coat, shorts, tights, and high-heeled platform shoes. During the rescue process, her face flushed red, showing obvious signs of anxiety. Some bystanders reminded her to call '120' (emergency services), but her companion replied that the phone was out of service and could not make calls.
"Wake up, are you okay?" After the final round of compressions, the woman asked anxiously. Finally, the man turned his face toward her, and his right hand began to move.
According to Mr. Zhou, because their phones were unusable, the two women did not dial the emergency number. After the beggar woke up, the woman saw that he was fine and then left. Soon after, the beggar also left the area.
After watching this video, different opinions arose among the surrounding pedestrians. One lady said that performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on a beggar is not something a female would typically do, "If it were me, I definitely wouldn't do it."
Upon revisiting, multiple eyewitnesses stated that the two women came out of Guiyou Building carrying bags. After reviving the beggar, the two disappeared without leaving any contact information.
Regarding the act of saving a life, those nearby who knew about the incident praised it endlessly. "Rarely seen, brave!" Mr. Wang said.
