Introduction to the plot of "Red Dresses Are Popular on the Street":
In the early 1980s at the Dafeng Cotton Mill in Shanghai. Axiang, a female worker from the countryside, heard that the girls in Shanghai have a habit of competing to wear beautiful clothes, called 'chopping clothes' and 'chopping skirts'. So she asked an individual clothing seller, 'Little Suzuki', to buy her a beautiful red silk skirt, which she wore to resist being mocked as a country bumpkin by the other female workers. Model worker Tao Xing'er liked this red skirt very much and secretly tried it on herself. Axiang found that Tao Xing'er looked extremely beautiful in the red skirt, so she invited her to go 'chopping skirts' in the park together. The shift leader thought exposing shoulders and arms in red skirts was very inappropriate, so Tao Xing'er secretly added a white collar and white patch to the red skirt. But it was quickly torn off by her companions. Encouraged by her friends, Tao Xing'er finally went to the park with the other female workers. She mustered up the courage to walk alone through the crowd, boldly comparing her beauty with various colorful skirts and dresses, leaving all the beautiful clothes behind. In order to elevate her status, Axiang falsely claimed that her brother was in Hong Kong and bought clothes, skirts, and socks from 'Little Suzuki', claiming they were 'Hong Kong goods' and sold them at a low price to the female workers. Axiang couldn't cover the loss from buying high and selling low with her salary, so she had to ask 'Little Suzuki' to sell her own clothes. The shift leader, representing the organization, came to question Axiang, and Axiang burst into tears, revealing that she only wanted to spend money to buy equality and couldn't bear being mocked as a 'country bumpkin'. Tao Xing'er redeemed Axiang's clothes, and Ge Jia also scolded the female workers who mocked Axiang. During the team meeting to help educate Axiang not to look down on herself, Tao Xing'er unexpectedly examined her own weakness of not daring to admit her guilt publicly. She finally understood that young people in the 1980s should live more boldly and sincerely.
