Vivian Karonga has never been particularly thrilled about the influx of Chinese in her country. But she concedes they are good-natured and have an indisputable work ethic that may not be bad for Zambia, an African nation where the life expectancy for its 11 million people is only a little over 40 and half are unemployed. Anyway, that was what Vivian thought before July 13, 2004. On that day, her second child was born, surprising everyone with eyes slanted unlike most indigenous babies.
